The mission of the Barrington Police Department is to enforce the laws of society, maintain order, protect life and property, deliver quality service to the community, and to assist the public-at-large in a manner consistent with the rights and dignity of all persons as provided for by law and under the Constitution of the United States of America and the State of New Hampshire.
Business Hours
Regular office hours are Monday - Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
If the main door is locked, use the call box at the main door. If there is no answer because the officers are on patrol or on call, you can call the Strafford County Dispatch Center (664-2700), and an officer will contact you as soon as possible.
Animal Control
The Police Department is also responsible for contacting the Animal Control Officer. Call the business number during regular hours, or call dispatch during off-hours. If the problem is immediate, the police will address it.
Animal Complaints
Chapter 466 of the NH RSAs governs the enforcement of Animal Complaints. The Town
adopted this chapter by referendum vote in 1992 - for the enforcement of dog complaints.
There has never been any action taken by the Town sanctioning the enforcement of cat complaints.
Dogs must be under the owner’s control whenever they are off the owner’s property. The statute also prohibits sustained barking, other nuisance behaviors and aggressive behavior.
The procedure to file an animal complaint is to call the Police Department 664-7679 or 2700. Unless the issue involves aggressive behavior, the complaint will be referred to the Animal Control Office (ACO). If the report is aggressive behavior, an officer will be dispatched to the scene to provide immediate assistance and follow up intervention will be referred to the ACO. After the investigation is complete, a civil violation notice may be served and if it is not answered a summons to District Court will follow.
PLEASE NOTE: A written statement is required. NH RSA 466:31 III(b) requires that the name of the reporting party be released. The Town has budgeted 7 hours per week for the Animal Control Officer. Once the original complaint is received, it will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible.
