Barrington functions under a traditional form of town government where the voters act as the legislative body. Annually, elections are held for various positions, and budgetary and other questions are put before the voters in the form of warrant articles.
This process then follows an Official Ballot Referendum Form of Meeting (or SB 2) where there are two sessions of Town Meeting. The first (deliberative) session is held in early February where the warrant articles are debated, and during the second session, the final vote on the warrant articles, as amended, occurs at the polls by means of an official ballot which is (the official election date) held the second Tuesday in March. A five-member board of selectmen then administers the results of the vote, with daily operations overseen by a town administrator and department heads.
